As I may have mentioned, I'm changing everything, pretty much, and all in May, give or take.

So years ago now my Significant Other moved out because... well, because we're incompatible kinds of queer and neither one nearly as flexible as we thought or hoped or tried to be. We didn't have the heart to untie the knot, but we've always been cordial and in total agreement about who should own what. Thankfully, she even wants the Ugliest Lamp in Boston (the body is a life-size rooster statue in plaster. It'll go nicely with her metal Beyoncé chicken.) Anyway, at the beginning of March we finally went through with the divorce.

She wants the house, which I'm done with (see below). So while we and our attorneys were at the court house getting divorced, the registry was right there, so we signed and filed the papers and she now owns the house, subject to a mortgage I'm holding. It's a nice fixed-income investment for me, and she doesn't have to do any black magic to come up with a down payment in order to become a homeowner. Almost immediately, she started getting ads for insurance and various homeowner services at the house. She's letting me stay until mid-May.

And then, we went out to brunch. As one does.

I'm retiring. The spacecraft operations job got to be just too annoying, the hours too long, the work/life ratio way too large. "That's unfortunate," says the Leader when I told him I'd basically given up everything in my life which requires being in a particular place on a regular schedule (which is... everything). Anyway. I'm retiring. Yay. I might spend my time writing novels. If you missed the last one I published, ping me and I'll hook you up. It even has my actual name on the cover.

I'm turning 65 in June. So (eep) after the manner of my people, I applied for Medicare this week. Socialized medicine for the win.

And I'm moving Out West. When my older brother retired, he decided that only one more move, ever, would be a great thing, and turned up this "continuing care retirement community" near Denver, which in turn is near where I grew up. My younger brother lives an hour or so away. His ex, whom I quite like, is, alas, moving to Oregon later in the summer. The last of their kids is going out there to college, so it'll make sense for her to be near but not too near. So anyway. Finding a place where stairs are optional, the bedroom is very near the bathroom, there's a community of interesting people, and there are helpers around for whenever I need them so I can age gracefully in place? I would call that a win.

The movers come for my stuff in mid-May, and have given themselves about 2.5 weeks to deliver it at the other end. Which means I can meander and mosey my way across the continent on my way to my new life.

Everything seems to be on track, which is rather amazing. Things are getting kind of nutty coming down to the end, with more and more things to do for and with the movers and the move manager. At the same time, the work-folk are moving the spacecraft control center out of the Land of Big Pharma Rents to the beltway in the 'burbs. So we're doing several-a-week simulations and demonstrations with the new control center to verify it's ready. We, soon to be they. There's a certain poetic justice to paying exactly one visit to the new place, to procure my access card. Not unlike paying exactly one visit to the building where HR is housed, for my exit interview.

Anyway. Everything's changing. It could be... exciting.

Congratulations on your retirement and on finishing the last bits that take care of the house (and the marriage).

Hopefully this new chapter in your life is more pleasant and fulfilling.

If you end up taking a very long route cross-country and find yourself in Chicago at the end of July, let me know as we'll be there.
